According to the Roman architect Vitruvius, the Corinthian order is the most ‘maidenly’ of the three orders of architecture; the columns being of finer proportions and elaborately decorated.  The most distinctive aspect of the Corinthian order are the acanthus leaves that spring from the top of the pillar to support the horizontal beam (the architrave).
